How to install Deadlock mods

The fastest way is Deadlock Mod Manager: find a mod in our catalog, click “Install with Mod Manager”, and the app downloads and enables it. By hand it takes five minutes, a text editor and one line in a config file. Both ways work for skins, HUD mods and sounds from GameBanana.

The easiest way: a mod manager

Deadlock Mod Manager (deadlockmods.app) is free and open source. It edits the game files for you, then installs, toggles and updates mods from GameBanana. If you would rather not touch game files, that is all you need.

  1. Download Deadlock Mod Manager from deadlockmods.app and install it (Windows).
  2. Launch it: the manager finds the game and sets up the mods folder for you.
  3. Open a mod in the DeadBoost catalog and click “Install with Mod Manager”. Your browser asks whether to open the app — allow it.
  4. The manager downloads the file from GameBanana and enables the mod. Start the game.

Disabling, removing or reordering mods happens in the app too. Our catalog makes mods easy to find: filter by hero and category, and listen to sound mods right on the page.

Deadlock mods catalog

More than 9,000 mods from Deadlock Mod Manager: skins, HUD, sounds and maps, no NSFW. Every one installs in one click.

Open the catalog

Install a mod manually, step by step

  1. Open the game folder: Steam → Deadlock → right-click → Manage → Browse local files. Then go to game\citadel.
  2. Create a folder named addons inside citadel if it is not there yet.
  3. Open game\citadel\gameinfo.gi in a text editor, find the SearchPaths block and add Game citadel/addons as the first line inside it. Save the file.
  4. Download the mod from GameBanana and unzip it. Rename the .vpk file to pak01_dir.vpk (the next mod becomes pak02_dir.vpk, and so on) and put it into addons.
  5. Restart the game. The mod is active.

Installing skins

A Deadlock skin is a mod like any other: same addons folder, same pak01_dir.vpk naming. Skins replace the model only on your screen — other players still see the default hero. Our skins pages show hand-picked skins and every catalog skin for each hero, with one-click install and a link to the author's GameBanana page.

Mods stopped working after an update

  • A patch may have overwritten gameinfo.gi. Open it and add Game citadel/addons back at the top of SearchPaths.
  • If a patch changed a hero's model, the skin can break until its author updates it on GameBanana.
  • To remove one mod, delete its pak…_dir.vpk from addons. To turn off every mod at once, remove the Game citadel/addons line from gameinfo.gi.

Can you get banned for Deadlock mods?

Valve has published no official rules on Deadlock mods. Skins, HUD and sound mods change only what you see, and there have been no ban waves for them so far — but Valve gives no guarantees, so you install them at your own risk. Stay away from anything that gives an in-game advantage.

Questions & answers

How do I install a Deadlock mod in one click?

Install the free Deadlock Mod Manager, open the mod in the DeadBoost catalog and click “Install with Mod Manager”: the app downloads the file from GameBanana and enables the mod.

Where is the Deadlock mods folder?

In the game folder under game\citadel\addons. Open it through Steam → Deadlock → Manage → Browse local files. If there is no addons folder, create it.

What do I add to gameinfo.gi?

The line Game citadel/addons, as the first line inside the SearchPaths block of game\citadel\gameinfo.gi.

Why are my Deadlock mods not working?

Most often a game update overwrote gameinfo.gi — add the Game citadel/addons line again. Also check that the file is named pak01_dir.vpk (or pak02 and up) and sits directly in addons, not in a subfolder.

Do other players see my skins?

No. Mods change files only on your computer, so only you see the skin.
