Deadlock rank points and demotion

You derank in Deadlock when, after your protection runs out, your points fall below the threshold of your current step. Protection is short: two matches after a new sub-rank, five after a new rank. Here is how points are counted and the moment a loss costs you a step.

How points are counted

The base rate is about 300 points for a win and the same off for a loss. On top sits a match-quality adjustment: if the system rated your team as the stronger one, a win pays less and a loss costs more, and the other way round. A sub-rank takes 1,000 points; crossing into the next rank takes 2,000.

What moves your rank points
EventPoints
Winabout +300
Lossabout -300
Third win in a row+70 on top
Fourth win in a row+90 on top
Fifth win in a row+110 on top
Sixth and later wins of a streak+130 on top

One loss resets the streak. That is why alternating wins and losses earns less than the same wins in a row: the bonus only starts from the third win with no loss in between.

When you actually derank

  • Protection is over and you are below the step threshold. With less than 300 points of margin, one loss is enough.
  • A losing streak right after a new rank. Getting in cost 2,000 points, but dropping out is just falling below the line, so a fresh rank is easier to lose than to earn.
  • The match-quality adjustment. A loss in a game where your team was the favourite costs more than 300 points.
  • Eternus. Sub-rank thresholds are recalculated regularly, so you can slip a sub-rank without playing if other Eternus players pass you on percentile.

How to hold a fresh promotion

  1. Do not quit right after a promotion if you are playing well: protected matches are the safest time to bank extra points.
  2. After protection, know your margin. A sub-rank taken by a hair is decided by the very next game.
  3. Two losses in a row - stop for the day. That is about -600 points, more than half a sub-rank.
  4. Stick to two or three heroes with the best win rate in your rank range instead of trying new ones at the threshold.
  5. In duo, play with a partner within one rank: that is the ranked rule, and a regular partner means fewer random losses.

Questions & answers

How many matches protect you from demotion in Deadlock?

Two matches after a new sub-rank and five after a new rank. Losses in that window do not drop you.

Why did I derank after one loss?

You reached the sub-rank by a hair and protection had already ended. The loss took about 300 points and you fell below the threshold.

Can you drop a whole rank?

Yes. A new rank is protected for five matches; after that it drops the same way a sub-rank does - when your points fall below the line.

Does Eternus decay without playing?

Your Eternus sub-rank can change without matches: it is a percentile among all Eternus players, and the thresholds are recalculated regularly.
