Placed too low: what to do next

Your placements landed you lower than you hoped. That is fixable: after the eighth match the regular ladder rules apply, and the way back up is counted in wins. Here is how many you need and how to avoid digging deeper.

First: how bad is it really

Placements are eight matches, and each one weighs more than a regular game. Two or three bad results early can easily drop your starting badge a full step below where you usually sit. That is not a permanent verdict: from here the rank moves through regular matches, and if you play above your badge, the points will show it. Before changing anything, look at the numbers rather than the feeling that you got robbed.

Where you sit among all players

Live data from the open deadlock-api stats for the last 30 days. The average Deadlock player is at Sentinel II right now: half of all players sit below that sub-rank. Mystic and below is 69.9% of players, Phantom and above is 5.4%, Eternus is 0.63%.

How many wins to the next rank

A win or a loss moves roughly 300 points. It is easiest to count in net wins — wins minus losses — so a 10-7 run is three net wins. The match-quality adjustment shifts each result a little in either direction, so treat the numbers as estimates.

Next rank (from sub-rank VI)2,0006-7
A full rank: 5 sub-ranks plus the jump7,00023-25

Win streaks shorten the road. From the third win in a row a bonus is added on top of the base points: +70 on the third, +90 on the fourth, +110 on the fifth and +130 on the sixth and every one after. Six straight wins give about 2,200 points instead of 1,800 — nearly half a sub-rank for free. A single loss resets the streak.

What not to do

  • Play on tilt. Two losses in a row cost 600 points, two thirds of a sub-rank. After the second one, end the session.
  • Switch heroes every match. Keep a pool of two or three heroes with your best winrate; the tier list for your rank bracket shows who is strong right now.
  • Leave or abandon matches. Penalties lock you out of ranked and freeze the climb.
  • Wait for a re-calibration. There is none within a season: placements are only the first 8 matches.
  • Make a second account for a fresh placement. That is smurfing: it is a report reason in the game, and in May 2026 Deadlock developers confirmed they had tested smurf detection.

A plan for the first two weeks

  1. Do not take a break right after placements: demotion protection after the rank is assigned gives you a safe window for your first regular games.
  2. Play in blocks of 3-5 matches at the time of day you play best, not until you finally get lucky.
  3. Every 10 matches, open the tracker: is the rank moving, and where do you trail players of your rank — souls per minute, damage, deaths.
  4. Find a partner of your rank or the one next to it: duo in ranked allows a gap of one rank at most.
  5. Review one lost match from start to finish. The recording shows what stats cannot: positioning, timings, fight decisions.

When to get help

If your rank has not moved in two weeks, the options go from least to most hands-on. Replay review: you send your matches, a high-rank booster sends back a recording with a voice breakdown of your mistakes. Duo evening: you play yourself with a booster in your party calling things out. Rank boost: Piloted or Duo, priced per sub-rank and locked into the order.

Replay review

1 to 5 of your matches: a recording with voice commentary on where the lane, the build and the fights went wrong. No account access needed.

Questions & answers

Can you redo placements in Deadlock?

No. Placements are the first 8 ranked matches of a season and cannot be repeated within it. After that only regular matches move your rank, at roughly 300 points per win or loss.

How many wins does it take to climb a rank?

A full rank is 7,000 points: five steps of 1,000 inside the rank and 2,000 for the jump. That is roughly 23-25 net wins, and win streaks reduce the number.

Why do I lose more points than I gain?

The match-quality adjustment: when the system rates you above your opponents, wins give less than 300 points and losses take more. It works in the other direction too.

Can I play duo right after placements?

Yes, once your rank is assigned. Your partner must be within one rank of you; Eternus only queues with Eternus, with a gap of three sub-ranks at most.
